Blue Hippopotamus: Music & Lyrics

My favorite places to write lyrics are in a bath tub with a glass of wine, out for a walk in the woods, sitting on a window sill with a nice breeze coming in or with rain outside, and traveling in a car or on a plane. Everything I've ever written has been in one of those places I think.

I write to capture my feelings and to comfort myself. I am my own child or friend giving myself advise, reminding myself what I believe, telling myself it's ok, or remembering to have fun. Once I capture the feeling in a song, I can sing it to myself the next time I feel the same way and then I feel balanced and whole. I also enjoy writing a song for a lover, it always feels romantic.

Singing songs feels very revealing to me. I often pretend I am never going to sing a song in front of anyone so that I stop worrying about what I'm writing. As personal as lyrics are, people still always ask for further explanation so I will write under each song even more than I already have in the lyrics. Some songs I'll explain more than others...
